Joyce Aboussie Hosts Fundraiser Dinner for Deval Patrick

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick told Missouri Democrats the party should focus on touting their ideas as they move to elections in 2014 and 2016.

Speaking at the Missouri Democratic Party’s annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner in downtown St. Louis, Patrick said the ideas of the modern Republican Party prioritize power, not policy.

“We need to be just as clear about what we’re for,” he said, pointing to education, job creation, and the idea of “the American dream and that it ought to mean something in people’s everyday lives and imaginations….”

After speaking to the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, Patrick quickly slipped out for a private fundraising event at the home of Democratic activist and Hillary Clinton political confidant Joyce Aboussie.

Remembering Richard Ben Cramer

Perhaps no one mastered the “old form” better than Richard Ben Cramer, who died on Monday, Jan. 7, in Baltimore, of complications from lung cancer. He was 62.

In 1992, Cramer delivered what may well be the best book ever on American politics: What it Takes: The Way to the White House. Like no one before him, Cramer spent months delving into the lives of the ’88 presidential candidates (except Jesse Jackson, who wouldn’t cooperate), answering fundamental questions about the motivation and the mettle of people who thought they could be president of the United States.

Joyce Aboussie, Gephardt’s top aide in those years, recalls Cramer as “smart, insightful and fun. Richard had a way of making folks feel like they knew him their whole life. A real pro and a decent guy who will be missed.”

Joyce Aboussie among Honored St. Joseph Academy Alumnae

While we sometimes make too much out of high school affiliations in this town, they are the ties that bind.

The warmth and legacy of a shared tradition were the backdrop of an animated conversation between Helen Antoine (class of ’81), Susan Conrad (class of ’83) and Annie Castellano (class of ’94), all alumnae of St. Joseph Academy (SJA) and each a winner of the St. Louis Business Journal’s Most Influential Women in Business (MIBW)….

Other MIBW winners with the same school colors include Joyce Aboussie, Kathy Osborne and Kathy Higgins. That must be one strong women’s school!

Joyce Aboussie Hosts President Bill Clinton’s Tour of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Former President Bill Clinton said Friday that genetic research being done at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis is helping increase the survival rate for children who have cancer.

Clinton visited patients and their parents at the hospital before heading to nearby Horn Lake, Miss., for the unveiling of a new electric car. The hospital, founded by the late actor Danny Thomas, treats children from all over the world and is considered a leader in child disease research. It also hosts foreign physicians, who then apply what they learned from St. Jude’s doctors when they return to their home countries.

Clinton also spoke with doctors and praised them for their work on the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project. The project is attempting to find better ways to treat diseases that affect children, including cancers of the eye, blood, brain and nervous system….

“To do all this sequencing, to find all these genetic variances for various kinds of childhood cancers, and to find variances that tell you how to adjust treatment accordingly, it’s a great thing,” Clinton said. “I think it’s going to, first of all, continue to increase the child survival rate.”

Clinton said St. Jude’s research has an international impact.

“They’re immediately disseminating this information around the world, so doctors in very poor countries, once they’re trained to treat accordingly, can access the information,” Clinton said.
